Until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of his hand. Jeanne Veronica DeYoung, 90, of Lake Ridge, Toms River, NJ, passed away peacefully at Hampton Ridge Healthcare on May 6, 2021. Born on September 11, 1930, she was the daughter of William and Vera Doyle. Jeanne grew up on Staten Island, NY, and attended St. Peter’s School for girls. She became a legal secretary, taking the Staten Island ferry to Manhattan (in her spiked heels), where she worked for Judge Louis Lefkowitz who later became Attorney General of NY. After moving to Toms River later in life, Jeanne worked for builder Hirair Hovnanian, President of Hovsons, Inc. Jeanne’s adoring husband Gerry proposed to “Jeannie with the light brown hair” on Valentine’s Day, 1950. They loved music and dancing, had an active life of fun and travel, couldn’t get enough of the beach and sunshine, and truly enjoyed their Irish heritage. Jeanne was a wonderful hostess and a marvelous cook. She was quite the talented artist, loved oil painting and crafting stained glass, and later on, Gerry and Jeanne took their artworks on the road to craft shows. Jeanne was a member of the Tradewinds Chapter of Deborah Hospital Foundation, raising funds through fashion shows and cookbook sales. Right up until the age of 90, Jeanne was always impeccably coiffed and stylishly dressed, with the perfect jewelry to compliment. When Gerry struggled for several years with his memory, Jeanne was truly his angel. She cared for him with incredible patience and love and put aside her own needs to be sure she was there for him. Gerry told anyone who would listen how grateful he was for his “bride”. Jeanne was preceded in death by her loving husband, Gerry, and her sister, Ellen Flynn. She is survived by daughters Susan Stanik and husband Paul, Geralyn Kennedy and husband Robert; grandchildren Jennifer Ernst and husband Kevin, Christopher Stanik and wife Elissa, Dillon Doucette and fiancé Brianne; great-grandchildren Aidan, Parker, Colin and Brady; devoted sister Margaret DeMattia and husband Victor. “Auntie Jeannie” is remembered with great fondness by numerous nieces and nephews. Special gratitude is expressed to the staff at Hampton Ridge Healthcare who took such compassionate care of Jeanne through the last year, when COVID regulations sadly prevented hugs from her loved ones. Family and friends may gather on Monday, May 17 from 8:30-9:30 a.m. at the Carmona-Bolen Home for Funerals, 412 Main Street, Toms River. A memorial mass will be offered at St. Joseph Church, Toms River at 10:00 a.m. Interment of cremains at NJ Veterans Cemetery will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jeanne’s name to Deborah Hospital Foundation www.deborahfoundation.org or to Fulfill (Monmouth and Ocean County Food Bank) www.fulfillnj.org
