Sarah May Murray

WHITING – Sarah May Murray, 85, passed away on Friday, January 7, 2022 at home surrounded by her family around her. Sarah was born on September 23, 1936, in Long Branch to the late Tracy and Iviah Bowater. She graduated from Long Branch High School and went to work for Rassas Brothers in Red Bank as a bookkeeper. She married her husband James Murray in 1961; they recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. After raising her children and volunteering with Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts for many years, she went to work at Monmouth Council of Boy Scouts and retired after working there for 25 years. Sarah was a proud member of Eastern Star for 67 years, first in Eatontown Chapter and then at Molly Pitcher Chapter #198 in Freehold. She enjoyed singing in the choir and volunteering at Whiting United Methodist Church. She also enjoyed reading, crocheting and cross-stitch. Surviving are her husband James; daughter Lisa Cheney and her husband Sam of Warminster, Pennsylvania; son Bruce Murray and his wife Leslie of Long Branch; son Tom Murray of Lake in the Hills, IL; son Doug Murray and his wife Sheila Whitley of Pawleys Island, SC; and her grandchildren Ariana Murray and Ronnie Murray of Long Branch, NJ. She is also survived by her sister Floreda Scarborough and her husband Fred of California and eight nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sister Joan Easton in 2005 and her grandson Ben Winkler in 2015. There will be a memorial service at Whiting United Methodist Church in the spring.
